The Myth of the “Perfect” Wedding
People assume wedding planners have flawless weddings.
Beautifully styled, perfectly timed, no stress.
The truth? Mine definitely had its moments but not without its life lessons!
Here’s what really happened behind the scenes of my own wedding day….
1. Both Suit and Dress Shops Went Into Administration
Yes, both.
Not one, but two of the retailers we’d ordered from went into administration before the wedding.
I wasn’t too worried about the suits because we caught it in time, but we found out about my wedding dress shop on a holiday in Bali, and there’s a special kind of dread that comes from realising your dream gown may never arrive. Thankfully, persistence, legal loopholes and going to pick it up from someone’s garage got me my dress in time — but it changed the way I vet suppliers forever.
Lesson learned: research the financial health and reliability of every vendor, especially if you’re booking far in advance. Make sure they have an ABN, make sure they have experience and look like they have longevity, and you have positive reviews from other vendors. If something smells fishy, swim away.

2. The Groomsman Who Forgot to Measure
Despite multiple reminders and timelines, one groomsman didn’t measure his shirt or suit properly before the final fitting.
On the morning of the wedding, two boys switched jackets (so neither fit properly), there were 2 extra pairs of pants (lord knows why) and I can just picture my husband’s laughter and pure frustration attempting to hold things together. Ultimately, not my problem, they had one job and I had way more things to worry about. Aim of the story, they’re grown humans, let them…thanks Mel Robbins…!
Lesson learned: don’t assume grown adults know how to measure themselves. Check. Always check.
3. The Flowers That Never Made It
My dream palette, black, dark burgundy, pale pink and sage arrived into Perth but went straight into quarantine. I remember watching another florist’s Instagram story that week saying their floral order had gone into quarantine, but it never occurred to me that mine had too.
My florist had to rework everything that week, replacing moody tones with red roses, foraging, picking flowers that weren’t on my list. Did it match my vision? Not even a little bit.
But did my bouquet turn out perfect? Yes, that was the one thing she made sure was what I wanted.
Lesson learned: flexibility and trust are everything. A good florist can pivot beautifully under pressure. They also won’t tell you what went wrong until 2 weeks after….!

4. The Linen That Missed the Mark
I had ordered a beautiful warm beige natural French linen for my bridal table but didn’t have the budget to get the same linen on each table. I listened to my stylist who suggested another one and while I thought a cheaper beige coloured alternative would arrive to complement, the linen that turned up was grey and it was the first thing I noticed when I entered the room. It changed the entire tone of the reception styling. I wasn’t happy, but I had to let it go.
Because when you’re already in your dress, it’s too late to re-order linen.
Lesson learned: go check your linen out in advance if you’re having doubts, because photos on the website very often look different to real life. I still do this with clients now.
5. The Red and Navy Candles
I wanted muted elegance, the napkins were navy which I was on board with, but I wanted dark oxblood colour candles to complement my floral colour palate. Now quite frankly a running joke, I got the navy, but I also got what looked like red in the photos.
When I first saw them, I thought, “This looks odd, this isn’t what I asked for?” It wasn’t the design I’d planned, and honestly now a brilliant reminder that even the best planners get surprises.

6. The Mirror Tables That Melted
Perth heat and mirror acrylic are not friends it seems. My stylist wanted to use new mirror acrylic tables on the Perth scene to reflect the festoon lights in the marquee which I was 1000% on board with – and actually very excited to see!
HOWEVER a beautiful balmy week of 34oC quickly changed to 42oC on my wedding day and the mirror-top tables warped in the sun, making the cutlery and crockery fall over everywhere. My stylist had to call upon my husband to make quick wedding life choices (something I don’t think he was happy about not wanting to get it wrong!) forcing my stylist to make the instant decision: swap them for white wooden tables. The supplier quickly rushed to their warehouse to make the switch.
Not what I wanted — but it saved the entire setup.
Lesson learned: the heat is a killer, literally…of tables…and plays a massive part of Perth wedding operations. It heats up cutlery and crockery on tables, turns marquees in greenhouses and can have devastating effects – on set ups and on staff. It is now an essential and integral part to every summer wedding thought process and it has even formed parts of my contract.

The Honest Truth
Stylistically, my wedding was not what I planned.
Between the red, white, and blue palette, grey linens and missing blooms, it looked like a Union Jack had exploded across the reception. At a yacht club. Not the plan AT ALL.
But here’s the thing: the laughter, the vows, the dancing — those didn’t depend on perfect styling. While it didn’t look like my dream wedding, the day was still full of love, joy, and stories I’ll never forget with the people I love the most.
I still got to marry my man, who I love more and more each day. Who gave me my children. Who works with me to create an incredible life for our family.
Why I’m Sharing This
Because if my wedding, as a professional planner, went sideways and still turned out beautiful, yours will too. You can plan every detail, but real life always finds a way to sneak in, and that’s what makes it human, memorable, and real, and what gives you those crazy stories to tell your kids!
